Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) ÷ 27. Depth in inches ÷ 12 gives feet. A 50 × 12 ft driveway at 4 inches is 7.4 yards.
Tons = cubic yards × the material's weight per yard. Stone runs about 1.4-1.5 tons a yard, fill dirt about 1.2, mulch about 0.3. Wet material weighs more.
Add 10% for waste and uneven subgrade. Add more for base stone like crusher run, which compacts 15-25%.
Weight per yard by material
- Pea Gravel — about 1.4 tons/yd³
- Crushed Stone — about 1.4 tons/yd³
- Crusher Run — about 1.5 tons/yd³
- Riprap — about 1.5 tons/yd³
- Fill Dirt — about 1.2 tons/yd³
- Topsoil — about 1.1 tons/yd³
- Concrete Sand — about 1.35 tons/yd³
- Masonry Sand — about 1.3 tons/yd³
- River Rock — about 1.35 tons/yd³
- Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) — about 1.3 tons/yd³
